On Tuesday through Friday, February 10–13, weather permitting, APAC Shears of Salina will perform concrete pavement repairs on Channel Road as part of preparation for the City of Salina’s 2025 Ultrathin Bonded Asphalt Surface (UBAS) program.
Work will take place on Channel Road just north of Glen. During this time, northbound Channel Road will be fully closed at Glen to allow crews to safely complete the repairs.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the work area when possible or proceed with caution to ensure the safety of construction crews.
The concrete repairs are necessary to prepare the roadway for a UBAS application later this year. Ultrathin bonded asphalt surfacing is a preventative maintenance treatment used throughout the State of Kansas to help extend the service life of roadways. The process consists of placing a thin, coarse aggregate hot-mix layer over a specialized asphalt membrane, similar to a chip seal but installed in a single pass using a spray paver. The membrane helps prevent water intrusion and provides a strong bond to the existing pavement. The finished surface allows water to disperse quickly, reducing roadway spray and improving visibility and traction during wet conditions. UBAS has performed well for many Kansas communities and provides a durable, high-friction surface in wet weather.
This work is a key component of the City of Salina’s 2025 Asphalt Maintenance Capital Improvement Program. The total contract cost for the project is $898,000.
