PRISCILLA HOWE NEW RESIDENCY
IN SALINA DECEMBER 7 -11, 2015
Storyteller Priscilla Howe will present a residency at several Salina elementary schools including the Heartland Programs December 7-11. Her visit is made possible through the Arts Infusion Program of Salina Arts & Humanities. The teaching artist will work with participating students on storytelling, puppetry and writing applications.
Priscilla Howe has been a full-time storyteller since 1993, after five years as a storytelling librarian. She loves visiting Salina, where she has been a teaching artist for one week or more every year since 1997. She makes her home in Lawrence with her cat Francis Bacon, but travels the world with a head full of stories and a bag full of puppets.
Howe spent February to June 2015 as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Bulgaria, where she collected folktales at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies in Sofia. She also offered performances and workshops around the country in both English and Bulgarian. The Fulbright Program is a prestigious U.S. government program for educational exchange. Howe studied Bulgarian in 1983 at Sofia University during a time when there were few Americans in Eastern Europe.
Priscilla will bring her worldly adventures to six different USD 305 locations in December, with a range of activities. She will work in Pre-K through 5th grade classrooms sharing her “Folk Tales from around the World” and then story-writing workshops with older students. She will be back for three more days in January 2016.
Howe also has been selected as Salina’s first Sharon Benson Visiting Artist. Each year, the Sharon Benson Visiting Artist residency designates a teaching artist to provide educational programs and content that reflects cultural diversity while connecting the arts to new and established audiences in relevant ways.
