While swimming pools can provide wonderful family recreation during the summer months, they can also pose a safety hazard if proper precautions are not taken. The City of Salina requires a permit, to be issued prior to the installation or construction of a swimming pool, when the pool is capable of holding more than 24 inches (2 feet) of water and will be used for swimming or wading.
There are three types of pool permits:
1. Above Ground Seasonal Pool
(to be taken down and stored in the off-season)
2. Above Ground Permanent Pool (stays up year-round)
3. In-ground Pool
Permits are also required for the plumbing and electrical work associated with installing a swimming pool. Inspections of all plumbing and electrical work associated with the pool, as well as inspection of the pool after it is set in place, are required. If you rent your home, you may also need permission from the property owner.
These requirements help ensure the safety of your family and guests. The Development Services Department has brochures which contain specific information and code requirements. They are titled “Above Ground Seasonal Swimming Pools” and “Above Ground Permanent Swimming Pools” and should answer most of the questions you may have. These brochures are available upon request in Room 201 of the City-County Building or on the City’s website at www.salina-ks.gov, click on Departments/Building Services. You may also call our office (785-309-5715) if you have additional questions. If you are planning construction/installation of an in-ground pool, please contact our office for information and code requirements.
Although these requirements apply to pools within the city limits of Salina, safe installation and use of swimming pools should be practiced wherever you live.

Have a safe and fun summer!
