The 41st Salina Spring Poetry Series, sponsored and organized by Salina Arts & Humanities, concludes on Tuesday, April 29, with a reading by Melissa Fite Johnson.
The reading will begin at 7 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave). Admission will be $5 at the door and free for students with ID.
Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate, curated this year’s series. Brimhall selected poets with a broad range of perspectives, who will share their work in Salina this April.
“One of the first poetry friends I was lucky enough to make in Kansas, Melissa made me feel a part of a community. Her poems often circle around the experiences in childhood that deeply shape who we become, as well as the daily routines of our life that become something sacred when we take the time to notice their gorgeous details,” says Brimhall.
Melissa Fite Johnson is the author of three full-length collections, most recently Midlife Abecedarian (Riot in Your Throat, 2024). Her poems have appeared in Ploughshares, Pleiades, HAD, Whale Road Review, SWWIM, and elsewhere. Melissa teaches high school English in Lawrence, KS, where she and her husband live with their dogs.
